Although born in Italy, Frances Xavier “Mother” Cabrini became a U.S. citizen and was the first American to become a saint. She was sent to the United States by the Catholic Church and set about hospitals, orphanages, schools and nurseries. She was the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart and was known as the Patroness of Immigrants.
