FLUX Public Art Projects

6:00 to 8:00 PM PUBLIC OPENING: 40+ PUBLIC ART PROJECTS Begin your evening with a tour of installations and performances, meet the exhibiting artists and enjoy music presented by the National Jazz Museum of Harlem. 

LOCATIONS: Marcus Garvey Park at 5th Avenue between 120th and 124th Streets, Eugene McCabe Field, Harlem Art Park, the Harlem Grown farm on 127th Street and along Fifth and Lenox Avenues. FREE.

8:00 to 10:00 PM OPENING NIGHT CELEBRATION STROLL Join the stroll on Lenox Avenue and take in the tastes and sounds of the neighborhood. Live music and complimentary beverages (with wristband) at participating venues. Saturday, May 7, 11am “Architecture + Growth”  Moderated by Warren James, Architect and Guest Curator A discussion between urban artists and architects. Warren James, Kendal Henry, NYC DCA, Percent for Art Program Director and FLUX artists José Soto and Kurt Steger explore how the contemporary artist influences the architectural vision and expression of urban planning and growth. These urban artists and architects deliberate the impact of their roles in persuading organic, physical and technological growth within the cityscape. Saturday, May 7, 11am “What, Why and Who to Collect in 2016” Moderated by David C. Terry, Director of Programs & Curator, New York Foundation for the Arts. Panelists: Joey Lico, Dena Muller, Larry Ossei Mensah and Gardy St. Fleur. Four distinguished cultural producers discuss trends in contemporary art, technological advances in the evolving art scene, and how they influence art buying in the national and international arena. The panel will explore how to collect with respect to said trends, while introducing the audience to new artists to watch in the future.  Classical Theatre of Harlem presents short fight scenes from their summer 2016 production of Macbeth, Uptown Shakespeare in Marcus Garvey Park // site 20

– Jose Rodriguez, Pennies From Heaven, An improvised live performance and symbolic offering of a penny mosaic // site 37

– Aya Rodriguez-Izumi, Temple, A one-on-one intervention based on divination practices from various cultures // site 6

– Nancy Rackozy, Weave the Liberian Flag with Nancy. Visitors are encouraged to bring clean used plastic bags and tablecloths and participate in the weaving // site 20
